Blackmagic Design Video Assist 5 Inch 12G HDR Monitor and Recorder

The Blackmagic Design Video Assist 5 inch 12G HDR is the model that works outdoors. Its screen runs at 2500 nits — more than eight times the brightness of the 3G model — with a P3 wide colour gamut, so you can actually judge exposure and colour in daylight rather than guessing under a hood.

Blackmagic RAW recording
Records Blackmagic RAW from compatible cameras over SDI — Constant Bitrate at 3:1, 5:1, 8:1 and 12:1, or Constant Quality at Q0 and Q5. Also records Apple ProRes 422 HQ, 422, LT and Proxy, and DNxHR HQX, SQ and LB with MXF variants. RAW capture to an external recorder is the practical way to get full grading latitude out of a camera whose internal codec is limited.

Connections
1 x 12G-SDI input and 1 x 12G-SDI output on Micro BNC, supporting 270Mb, 1.5G, 3G, 6G and 12G rates. 1 x HDMI 2.0a input and 1 x HDMI 2.0a output. 16 channels of embedded SDI audio in and out, 8 channels of embedded HDMI audio. 3.5mm headphone jack and built-in mono speaker. This model has no analog audio inputs — the 7 inch 12G HDR adds mini XLR inputs with phantom power.

Up to 2160p60 Ultra HD and 4K DCI to 30p. 10-bit 4:2:2, REC 601, 709 and 2020.

Media
1 x UHS-II SD card slot for Ultra HD recording (regular SD cards for HD), plus a USB Type-C 3.1 Gen 1 port for recording directly to an external drive — a capability the 3G models do not have.

Monitoring tools
Waveform, RGB Parade, Vector and RGB Histogram scopes as picture-in-picture or overlay with opacity control, with Waveform and Parade available in both standard and HDR modes. 3D LUT support, focus and exposure assist.

Power
External 12V supply, and compatible with Sony NP-F style batteries. Batteries not included.
